NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN ANALYSIS - CHARLIE

No country for old men is an American crime thriller which tells the story of of an ordinary man whose chance delivers a fortune that is not his. It shows a cat and mouse chase where three men cross each others paths in the landscape of 1980 West Texas.  The film shows themes such as fate while still following the villain driven plot.

The villain known as Anton Chigurh is a hired hitman who has no time or compassion for other human beings.  He gets pleasure and enjoyment out of killing people and we see this when he flips a coin to decide the fate of the innocent shop owner.  The weapon that he chooses to use is a bolt pistol which he also uses to blow locks on doors.The audience know little about him due to his lack of speech, which makes him a very mysterious character, this also causes tension whenever he is in the scenes.

Everything in the film is very dark, such as the costumes, the settings and the lighting.  This makes the film very frighting.  Also the short and sudden action scenes add a lot of tension to the film. These are all typical conventions that can be associated with a film in the thriller genre.

Also. the fact that we see the villain in the opening scene shows the audience that the film will revolve around him or that he is a big part of the film.  

ANALYSIS OF EXISTING PRODUCT - CHARLIE

My Comments:
This is an analysis of 'The Football Factory' which is a film that the famous actor Danny Dyer stars in. He is one of the main characters of the film and I enjoyed this film because the humour he brings to it and because I like football. It is a about a gang of hooligans that love and treasure West Ham football, the analysis goes into detail about codes and conventions and conforming to stereotypical representations.

PRODUCTION MEETING NOTES: JANUARY 12TH, 2014

The following information was noted down in the exercise book but has only been uploaded to blogger on 05/02/14.

January 12^th, 2014:

What I have completed since the last meeting:
- I have created a PowerPoint on the results of the target audience survey and outlines why I have chosen to create an opening scene in the thriller genre.
- I have analysed four existing products of the films ‘The Football Factory’, ‘Kidulthood’, ‘Fishtank’ and ‘when a  stranger calls’.
- I have done a shooting script and looked into market research.
- I have created the mood board for the Thriller genre and created a mid-project survey for the audience to complete so we can see how we are progressing so far from an audience perspective.

What I still need to complete:
- I plan to research into character and location, for example what type of characters would fit into the specific locations that are chosen. And the positives and negatives for possible locations that we thought about using.
- I will do a write up of what happened when we requested permission from Crystal Palace Train Station to film.
- Explanation of character profiles and what each characters background is.

How is the blog currently looking?
- Whenever I complete a task I ensure that I post it onto the blog and try to use a variety of formats throughout the different posts.
- Personally, I think the blog is looking in a good way.

How is the filming/editing currently doing?
- I have managed to do a lot of filming over December, as I have all the footage I need, I now have 1 minute of footage edited on the Mac and hope to have a lot more completed very soon.
 

CERTIFICATION - CHARLIE

'The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), is a non-governments organisation, funded by the film industry and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the UK. It has a statuatory requirement to classify videosm DVDs and, to a lesser extent, some video games under the 'Video Recordings Act 2010'. The following are the types of certificates that can be given to films:

U -Stands for universal which means the film is suitable for people of all ages.
PG - Stands for parents guidance, which means that younger audiences can see it however they will need parents with them as some parts may not be suitable for them.
12A - This means the film can be watched by younger viewers underthe age of 12, however they MUST be accompanied by an adult, if they are not accompanied by an adult they would not be allowed to view the film.

12 - This means the film is suitable for those aged 12 years and over.
15 - This means the film is suitable for those aged 15 years and over.
18 - This means the film is suitable for those aged 18 years and over.
R18 - This means the film is explicit and can only be shown in licensed premises only.
 
It is important that the correct cerftification is chosen for the film that is produced so that audiences that are young do not see material or scenes that is not suitable for their age.
If a film was going to be shown in cinemas, it would get sent off to the BBFC beforehand in order for them to give the film a certificate as to which audiences it is suitable for.
Majority of thrillers are usually rated either a 15 or 18 as many have scenes of violence and contain swearing.

MID-PROJECT SURVEY RESULTS - CHARLIE

My Comments:
I have conducted this mid-project survey to see what the audience think of the current stage I am at in the process of creating an opening scene of a film. The survey is based on questions about what I have produced so far from gathering footage and putting it together, and the current state of my blog.
This has really helped me with the improvements that i can make to my work because with an opinion from the target audience I have been able to identify and get more of an idea of what they want and where I am currently going wrong.

CHARACTER PROFILES - CHARLIE

My Comments:
This presentation is a breakdown of the characteristics and roles of the characters that are in the opening scene. It shows how we have presented the characters as mainly bad people because of their previous criminal crimes being stated on the left hand  side. There is also a description of how important the character is in the scene on the right hand side.
