The villain known as Anton Chigurh is a hired hitman who has no time or compassion for other human beings. He gets pleasure and enjoyment out of killing people and we see this when he flips a coin to decide the fate of the innocent shop owner. The weapon that he chooses to use is a bolt pistol which he also uses to blow locks on doors. The audience know little about him due to his lack of speech, which makes him a very mysterious character, this also causes tension whenever he is in the scenes.
Everything in the film is very dark, such as the costumes, the settings and the lighting. This makes the film very frighting. Also the short and sudden action scenes add a lot of tension to the film. These are all typical conventions that can be associated with a film in the thriller genre.
Also. the fact that we see the villain in the opening scene shows the audience that the film will revolve around him or that he is a big part of the film.
